Loose Denture Problems & How to Fix Them

Over time, dentures tend to get loose. This can happen for a few reasons: jaw bone resorption, weight loss, and, age/ wear of the denture itself. It is essential to book your yearly check-ups and professional denture cleanings with your Denturist here at Minuk & Koster Denture Clinic. They are not only free of charge, but these appointments will also allow a thorough inspection of your denture fit, and address concerns that may arise over the life of your denture.

Possible Loose Denture Solutions

Adjustments: If you have a partial denture that has a clasp, your denturist in Winnipeg can tighten the clasp for a tighter fit.

Reline: Often done when the denture is worn, or in the months following an immediate denture. A reline is when we take a new impression and add more acrylic to the fitting side of the denture which makes it a tighter fit. This treatment can be completed on the same day. You’ll come in at 8-8:30 am and pick up around 2 pm as your denture will be processed here in our onsite lab.

Soft Liner: A cushion for better fit and comfort that is placed in a new lower denture or when a reline is performed.

Tissue conditioner: This is a temporary reline with healing properties that refit the denture after immediate placement and before a permanent reline is done (as the gums heal and shrink after extractions).  This treatment is completed chair side and takes about 1 hour.

Replacement denture: Sometimes due to the age and wear of your dentures, it will be time for a replacement set. We can book you in with our Treatment Coordinator to discuss your options, send a pre-authorization to your insurance company (if applicable), and, discuss a payment plan.

Dental implants: The only real solution for loose lower dentures is dental implants. Unlike an upper denture, a lower denture has no suction and relies heavily on the bone structure it sits upon. If a denture wearer has little jaw bone, the lower denture is not likely to stay put. Two or more implants are placed which assures your denture will stay in place. This will reduce sore spots and discomfort. If your denture is in good condition, your denturist can retrofit your denture to the implants or, we will make you a new denture.

Adhesive: Denture adhesives can be used to aid a loose denture but, are a short-term solution.

Remember, your denture needs to have Retention, Support, and Stability to function properly.
