What is a Digital Denture?
Very little has changed in the denture industry in over a hundred years. Today dentures are entirely hand-crafted. The content of a book published in 1919 “Professional Denture Services”, is still being taught in schools today around the world. It’s clear that technology will enhance this industry and lead to many patient advantages such as higher quality of care and faster care.
So, what makes Digital Dentures different? A digital denture can be replaced easily should you ever lose it.
Let’s say you’re on vacation and you lose your denture. To replace that denture, you would have to find a local denturist/dentist to have them take new impressions and start over. Unfortunately, this usually takes 3 weeks and 5 appointments. Sometimes, you just can’t wait that long. With a digital denture, if you lose your denture anywhere in the world, we can simply ship you a new one without a single appointment. This is because we have a digital record of your denture and can recreate that denture with 3D printing or milling. Many patients who work in the public eye are also getting a back-up denture as peace of mind so there is zero time waiting for a replacement. Thanks to this advanced technology, the cost for a spare denture is also much less than the original. We all have spare sets of reading glasses or sunglasses, but the cost to hand-make dentures always prevented them from being affordable. This has changed.
Digital Dentures fit better and stronger!
The fit of digital dentures is also significantly improved. When creating conventional dentures, the acrylic shrinks while curing. We try to compensate for this as best we can with injection molding. However, with digital dentures, there is no shrinkage. Milled Digital Dentures are more durable and less porous than traditional dentures thus, stronger and more hygienic. Acrylic is pre-cured into highly compressed discs and milled on machines 100x more accurately than a human hair. While you might not be able to see the difference, you can feel the difference.
Studies have also shown that digital dentures can be more than twice as strong as traditional dentures. With conventional dentures, individual stock denture teeth are used. With digital dentures, the teeth are connected to each other under the “gums” to provide additional strength. In addition, instead of just using standard acrylic (plastics), we are now also able to use premium tooth materials generally used for crowns, bridges, and veneers. These premium nano-composite materials give us an entirely new option for treatment. Because these materials are meant for high-impact restorations, placing them on a denture creates a premium wear-resistant denture that we’ve simply never been able to offer in the past.
Missing teeth can compromise your health, eating habits, speech, appearance, and confidence and that is why we’ve continued to give you state-of-the-art options, materials, and quality denture care, all in a comfortable atmosphere.
